Berkshire Hathaway Invests $36.6 Billion in Alphabet, Marking a Shift Towards AI

Berkshire Hathaway has made a significant investment in Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, acquiring approximately 106 million shares valued at around $36.6 billion. This investment represents about 10% of Berkshire's equity portfolio, making Alphabet its third-largest holding after Apple and American Express. The move signals a notable shift for Warren Buffett's firm, which historically avoided technology companies.

The investment began in the third quarter of 2025 with initial purchases estimated between $4 billion and $5.7 billion. In June 2026, Berkshire participated in a $10 billion private placement as part of Alphabet's larger $80 billion equity raise aimed at expanding AI infrastructure. This commitment comes as Alphabet's stock has surged approximately 70% year-over-year, driven by advancements in its Gemini AI models and increased revenue from Google Cloud services.

Berkshire's total equity portfolio was valued between $299 billion and $362 billion in 2026, indicating that the $36 billion investment in Alphabet is a substantial allocation. However, this position carries risks not typically associated with Berkshire's traditional investments, particularly regulatory challenges. Alphabet is currently facing antitrust proceedings in the U.S. that could impact its revenue from search advertising, which is crucial for funding its AI initiatives.
