Dee Goens Appointed CEO of Zora Amid Company Transformation
Dee Goens has been appointed as the new CEO of Zora, taking over from co-founder Jacob Horne, who has stepped down after more than five years with the company. Goens, who previously served as the Chief Operating Officer, assumes leadership as Zora undergoes significant changes, including a substantial reduction in its workforce to fewer than 10 employees and a strategic pivot from its original focus on non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to a new model centered around tradable creator and content coins.
Founded in 2020, Zora initially gained attention as a platform for minting and trading NFTs, securing approximately $60 million in funding, including a $50 million Series C round in 2022 that valued the company at around $600 million. The recent shift in strategy involves the introduction of the $ZORA token, which was launched on the same day as Horne's departure, with a total supply of 10 billion tokens. This new direction aims to tokenize individual creator profiles and pieces of content, transforming them into tradable on-chain assets.
Zora's transition to creator and content coins aligns with the emerging SocialFi sector, which focuses on monetizing social interactions and content. The company has reported significant trading volumes and a surge in user activity, with millions of weekly users compared to just hundreds at its inception. Despite its leaner structure, Zora's innovative approach to tokenizing content rather than just creator identities sets it apart in the evolving landscape of decentralized finance.
