DeFi Yield Sources Face Challenges Amid Market Decline

The decentralized finance (DeFi) sector has experienced significant turmoil following a sharp decline in the total value locked (TVL) in liquid staking tokens, which fell from approximately $89 billion in late 2025 to $30 billion by June 2026. This dramatic drop has prompted a reevaluation of the sources of yield within the DeFi landscape, as yields have compressed and liquidity has diminished.

DeFi yields are derived from various economic activities, primarily lending, automated market maker (AMM) swap fees, proof-of-stake rewards, delta-neutral strategies, and token emissions. Lending protocols such as Aave and Compound facilitate borrowing and lending, while AMMs like Curve and Uniswap generate fees from trades. Additionally, liquid staking protocols allow users to earn rewards without locking up their assets directly, contributing to the yield ecosystem.

The recent market downturn has led to a decline in borrowing demand, resulting in lower interest rates and reduced returns for lenders. Furthermore, perpetual funding rates, which had previously provided reliable yields, have normalized, impacting delta-neutral strategies. As a consequence, the liquid staking sector has been particularly affected, with its TVL reaching a two-year low.

In contrast, protocols that focus on usage-driven yields, such as Aave, Compound, and MakerDAO, have managed to maintain more stable returns, typically ranging from 3% to 15% APY. Ethena's sUSDe product, which relies on market conditions rather than token emissions, has also shown resilience, although its appeal fluctuates with funding rates. This shift highlights the importance of genuine utility in sustaining yield in the evolving DeFi market.
