Mango Excellent Media Stock Surges Following AI-Generated Drama Premiere

Mango Excellent Media, a state-controlled Chinese media company, experienced a significant stock surge this week after the premiere of its fully AI-generated drama series, Journey to the West: The Later Tale. The show, which aired on August 31, is notable for being the first of its kind to be broadcast during prime time on a mainstream satellite channel in China.

Following the premiere, Mango's stock hit the daily limit-up of 20% on August 31, closing at 16.98 yuan, and achieved the same limit the next day, rising to approximately 20.38 yuan on September 1. This two-day rally resulted in a cumulative gain of around 44%, adding over 10 billion yuan to the company's market capitalization, which is now estimated between 31.8 and 38 billion yuan.

The series is based on the classic Chinese tale of the Monkey King and was produced under the regulatory framework of the National Radio and Television Administration. Mango has been investing in AI content capabilities since 2018, culminating in the successful launch of this fully AI-generated drama. However, despite the stock surge, the company's financial results for the first half of 2026 reveal a stark contrast, with a reported net profit of only 202 million yuan, a 73.58% decline from the previous year, raising concerns about its long-term profitability.
