NYSE Proposes Extended Trading Hours for Select Options

NYSE American has submitted a proposal to the SEC to extend trading hours for a select group of highly liquid equity options. If approved, this change would allow trading to begin at 7:30 a.m. ET, two hours before the regular market opens at 9:30 a.m. The proposal includes a brief post-close trading window from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. ET, adding flexibility for traders to react to market developments.

The exchange plans to limit eligibility to approximately 100 of the most actively traded options, requiring an average daily volume of at least 150,000 contracts and an underlying equity market capitalization of $50 billion or more. NYSE American intends to conduct biannual reviews to ensure that only qualifying options remain eligible for extended trading hours.

This initiative follows a similar approval granted to Cboe on May 28, which aims to implement extended trading hours as well. However, Cboe's launch has faced delays due to necessary adjustments in clearing support, highlighting the complexities involved in options market operations. As of late August, NYSE's proposal is still pending SEC approval, with the industry awaiting confirmation from the Options Clearing Corporation regarding operational readiness for extended sessions.
