Optimism Transfers 546.9 Million OP Tokens to Strategic Fund
The governance of Optimism has approved a significant proposal to transfer 546.9 million OP tokens, valued at approximately $49.7 million, from a reserve originally set aside for user airdrops to a strategic ecosystem fund managed by the Optimism Foundation. This decision effectively cancels the remaining airdrop pool and allows the foundation to utilize these tokens for various initiatives aimed at promoting the growth of OP Mainnet and OP Enterprise.
The proposal received substantial support during the on-chain voting process, with 17.974 million OP votes in favor and 10.931 million against. A crucial vote from the core development team, Test in Prod, contributed 8.486 million OP just before the voting period ended, increasing the support rate from 45.77% to 61.84%. Without this last-minute vote, the proposal would have fallen short with a support rate of only 46.47%.
The Optimism Foundation has previously distributed 269.1 million OP tokens through five airdrops, but it has indicated that further broad user acquisition is no longer aligned with its current institutional strategy. The newly established fund will facilitate transactions related to various chains, protocols, and infrastructure, as well as provide incentives for activities on OP Mainnet. However, some governance representatives have expressed concerns about the broad authorization and are advocating for clearer guidelines on deployment expectations and success metrics. The foundation plans to provide updates on token accounting and deployment status in its annual budget report.
