Public Citizen Reports $4.7 Billion Losses Linked to Trump's Cryptocurrency Projects

A report released by the consumer rights organization Public Citizen claims that cryptocurrency projects associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump and his family have resulted in investor losses totaling at least $4.7 billion since 2022. The majority of these losses, approximately $3.2 billion, are attributed to the TRUMP meme coin, while investors in World Liberty Financial's USD1 stablecoin reportedly have not experienced significant losses.

The report highlights that Trump has profited substantially from these ventures, earning $7.2 million from NFT royalties, over $600 million from the sale of World Liberty tokens and equity, $635 million from meme coin royalties, and $197 million from investments in World Liberty. These earnings do not account for shares he continues to hold in the companies involved, with some figures included in his 2025 disclosure documents indicating his cryptocurrency-related income has reached $1.4 billion.

Public Citizen has reiterated its call for ethical provisions to be included in the Digital Asset Market Clarification Act (CLARITY Act), which would require the President and his family to divest from projects related to the cryptocurrency industry. The bill is set for a final vote on September 15 and needs the backing of at least 60 senators to proceed. In response to the report, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that Trump's cryptocurrency investments do not present a conflict of interest.
