Bitcoin ETFs Experience $450 Million in Outflows Amid September Selling Pressure

Between September 8 and September 10, 2026, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) faced significant net outflows totaling approximately $450 million. This sharp decline followed a week of strong inflows, where nearly $1 billion was added to these funds, including a remarkable single-day influx of $730.9 million on September 3. The reversal in sentiment was stark, with September 10 alone accounting for $282.6 million in redemptions, marking the largest single-day outflow during this period.

The outflow trend began modestly on September 8 with $46.6 million in net sales, which escalated to $120.2 million on September 9. The ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) was particularly affected, reporting $164.3 million in outflows on September 10, making it the primary contributor to that day's losses. In contrast, Morgan Stanley's MSBT was the only fund to see positive inflows during this timeframe, highlighting the widespread nature of the sell-off.

Since their launch in January 2024, Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated approximately $55.17 billion in net inflows, with total assets under management nearing $97.5 billion. However, 2026 has proven challenging for these funds, with net outflows for the year reaching about $1.07 billion. The rapid shift from nearly $1 billion in weekly inflows to $450 million in outflows within a single week has raised concerns among portfolio managers, indicating a potential shift in market sentiment.

The concentrated selling on September 10 suggests a tipping point rather than a gradual reassessment of investment strategies. This dynamic is particularly noteworthy given ARK Invest's focus on attracting growth-oriented, risk-tolerant investors, which may signal broader implications for market behavior in the coming weeks.
