Bitcoin ETFs Gain Traction with New Conversion Options from BlackRock and Morgan Stanley

The landscape of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is evolving as BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) streamline the process for investors to convert Bitcoin holdings into ETF shares. IBIT has successfully processed over $5 billion in in-kind conversions, allowing investors to exchange actual Bitcoin for ETF shares without incurring capital gains taxes, a significant advantage introduced by recent SEC policy updates.

In July 2026, BlackRock reduced the minimum threshold for in-kind Bitcoin-to-ETF swaps from $25 million to $1 million, broadening access to high-net-worth individuals and smaller funds. This change enables a wider range of investors to participate in the Bitcoin ETF market, which was previously dominated by larger institutional players.

Morgan Stanley made its entry into the Bitcoin ETF space on April 8, 2026, becoming the first major U.S. bank to launch a spot Bitcoin ETF. MSBT debuted with a competitive 0.14% expense ratio, attracting approximately $34 million on its first trading day and surpassing $100 million within its first week. The fund utilizes Coinbase Custody for Bitcoin storage and BNY Mellon for cash management, leveraging Morgan Stanley's vast client asset base for distribution.

The introduction of lower fees and easier conversion processes is intensifying competition among Bitcoin ETF providers. IBIT's substantial assets under management and liquidity position it favorably in the market, while MSBT's low expense ratio pressures other providers to justify their fees, potentially benefiting investors seeking cost-effective options in the growing Bitcoin ETF sector.
