Moonwell DeFi Protocol Loses $8.7 Million in Exploit on Base

Moonwell, a decentralized finance (DeFi) lending and borrowing protocol, has experienced a significant exploit on the Base network, resulting in the loss of approximately $8.7 million. The attack involved manipulating the price of MAMO, a relatively illiquid token, which allowed the assailant to borrow real cbBTC from Moonwell's lending market.

The exploit was reported by CertiK, a blockchain security firm, which indicated that the attacker artificially inflated the collateral value of MAMO before executing the theft. The stolen funds have been traced to an address associated with the attacker, raising concerns about the security of the protocol.

Moonwell operates across multiple blockchain networks, including Base, Optimism, Moonbeam, Moonriver, and Ethereum, enabling users to supply assets for variable lending yields or borrow cryptocurrencies against collateral. Following the exploit, the price of Moonwell's WELL token fluctuated, initially rising to $0.0045 before dropping to $0.0033.
