Gold and Bitcoin ETFs Surge into Top Trading Rankings

SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) have re-entered the top 10 most traded exchange-traded funds (ETFs), surpassing semiconductor-focused funds that had dominated earlier in 2026. In a recent trading session, GLD achieved a volume of $6.80 billion, which is 228% of its 30-day average, while IBIT recorded $5.21 billion, amounting to 415% of its average volume.

The surge in trading activity for these ETFs reflects a broader interest in alternative assets. Digital asset ETFs collectively reached a turnover of $10.16 billion, representing 252% of their recent average, with IBIT being a significant contributor to this increase. Notably, IBIT has experienced net creations during the period from August 21 to 24, indicating that new investments are flowing into the fund rather than merely existing holders trading shares.

GLD, which holds physical gold bullion, serves as a barometer for actual demand for gold, while IBIT, launched in January 2024, provides institutional investors with a regulated means to gain exposure to Bitcoin. The growing interest in both assets suggests a shift towards alternatives to traditional dollar-denominated investments, as investors seek to diversify their portfolios.
