Ledger and Trezor Collaborate on Security Vulnerability Disclosure Amid AI Threats

Ledger and Trezor, two leading manufacturers of cryptocurrency hardware wallets, have joined forces to address a recently discovered security vulnerability in Trezor's Safe 7 wallet. This collaboration marks a rare instance of competitors working together to enhance product safety in the tech industry. The vulnerability, identified by Ledger's security research team, Donjon, involves a laser fault-injection attack on the TROPIC01 chip, which is integral to the Safe 7 wallet's security architecture. The companies have called for industry-wide standards for reporting security flaws, emphasizing the need for collective action in light of evolving threats.

The vulnerability was disclosed publicly on June 3, 2026, following coordination with the chip's manufacturer, Tropic Square. This collaboration not only highlighted the initial flaw but also uncovered an additional attack vector related to PIN functions. Importantly, the attack requires physical access to the device and specialized equipment, posing no remote risk to users. Trezor has reassured its customers that their funds remain secure due to the Safe 7's three-layer security design, which mitigates the impact of any single vulnerability.

Both companies have expressed concern over the accelerating pace of AI technology, which can significantly shorten the time between the discovery of vulnerabilities and their exploitation. Ledger referenced a $116 million incident involving Coldcard wallets as a cautionary example of the potential risks associated with weak cryptographic security. Trezor's CEO, Matej Žák, emphasized the importance of this cooperative approach, suggesting it should serve as a model for the industry moving forward. This partnership underscores the necessity for transparency and responsible disclosure practices in the evolving landscape of hardware security.
