Mexican Authorities Dismantle Clandestine Crypto Mining Operation Linked to Cartels

Mexican authorities have dismantled a hidden cryptocurrency mining operation in the remote mountains of Tlaola, Puebla, seizing 300 graphics processing units (GPUs) and satellite equipment. The operation, which was reportedly running on stolen electricity, was uncovered between September 8 and 12, marking the fourth such bust in the Puebla region since early 2025. Investigators suspect that the operation was funded by organized crime, potentially linked to major criminal organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The mining facility was strategically located near the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric dam, allowing operators to siphon electricity from the grid without detection. Security analyst David Saucedo highlighted that such operations require significant technical expertise and funding, which typically points to well-resourced entities rather than small-time operators. This trend reflects a growing involvement of organized crime in cryptocurrency activities, as cartels increasingly adopt digital assets for their operations.

In 2025, crypto-related money laundering activities associated with organized crime surged by 55.8%. The preferred cryptocurrencies for these activities include Bitcoin, Monero, and Tether (USDT), each serving distinct purposes in the laundering process. Mining operations enable cartels to generate new coins without the transaction history that comes from purchasing on exchanges, thus avoiding regulatory scrutiny. Additionally, the theft of electricity significantly reduces operational costs, effectively allowing the public to subsidize cartel crypto production.
