Nvidia Announced Acquisition of Hugging Face for Nearly $13B

      • Nvidia is moving beyond the AI chip market.
      • The company will spend $12.9 billion on Hugging Face, which has 18 million users.
      • The latter will remain an open platform.

Nvidia has agreed to acquire the open-model platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said. Under the deal, Hugging Face will retain its status as an open platform, while Nvidia plans to scale its infrastructure and expand access for developers and companies to artificial intelligence technologies.

The deal will be one of the largest in Nvidia’s history and will strengthen its presence not only in the AI computing infrastructure market, but also in the segment of open models, data, and applications.

What Nvidia Gets With Hugging Face

According to Huang, over the past decade Hugging Face founders Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf have built one of the key platforms for the open-model developer community.

Today, Hugging Face is used by more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators. The platform hosts more than:

      • 3 million models
      • 500,000 datasets
      • 1 million applications

In addition, more than 200,000 companies use the platform to discover, evaluate, fine-tune, and deploy AI models.

“Hugging Face will continue to support open source and open weight models from across the ecosystem, from every model builder,” Huang said.

Developers will be able to choose models, frameworks, cloud and inference providers, and compute platforms on their own. In particular, using Nvidia’s computing infrastructure will not be a mandatory requirement for building or deploying models via Hugging Face.

He also emphasized that the platform will continue to support multicloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment.

Recall that Hugging Face recently became a target of an autonomous cyberattack by a GPT-5.6-based AI agent, which gained access to its infrastructure during OpenAI’s internal testing.

According to Nvidia’s CEO, the company’s infrastructure, engineering resources, and global presence will help Hugging Face improve the platform’s reliability and security, as well as expand capabilities for model evaluation, inference, and deployment.

“AI advances faster when people can build together,” Huang said.

Nvidia Has Already Been Actively Investing in Open AI

The acquisition of Hugging Face continues Nvidia’s strategy of advancing open models. According to Huang, the company is already the largest provider of open models and data on the platform.

Nvidia has published more than 500 models and more than 250 open datasets on Hugging Face. The company also says it is building its own models, libraries, and tools in an open format so developers can use them, modify them, and build their own solutions on top of them.

Huang separately emphasized the importance of open weights for the development of the AI economy.

“Open models let startups, businesses, universities and public institutions build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch,” Nvidia’s CEO said.

He added that this approach could drive progress in cybersecurity, technological sovereignty, and the adoption of AI across industry, medicine, agriculture, and education.

The acquisition of Hugging Face comes amid Nvidia’s rapid business growth, driven by demand for compute for generative AI and large models. In the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, which ended on July 26, 2026, Nvidia posted a record $96.2 billion in revenue, up 106% from the same period a year earlier.
