Polygon Addresses Security Vulnerabilities with Two Hard Forks

Polygon Labs has announced the resolution of several security vulnerabilities in its proof-of-stake network through two hard forks, which were initially deployed privately. The fixes were incorporated into the Austin hard fork of the Bor client and the Kyoto hard fork of the Heimdall client, following a standard protocol that included validation on the Amoy testnet before public disclosure after the mainnet was secured.

The Austin hard fork specifically addressed two denial-of-service vulnerabilities in block processing, including one that allowed malicious block producers to crash peer nodes by sending oversized field data. The Kyoto hard fork tackled a wider array of consensus hardening issues, with the most critical vulnerability enabling an attacker to compel the entire validator set to engage in costly coordinated work using a single crafted transaction. Polygon confirmed that these vulnerabilities were not exploited on the mainnet and have been proactively mitigated.

These upgrades are now mandatory for node operators and have been implemented without requiring state migration or resynchronization. This announcement coincides with a significant transition for Polygon, which has recently migrated its traditional MATIC token to POL as part of a broader network architecture overhaul. Despite these developments, the price of POL has not seen an increase, trading at approximately $0.09983, reflecting a 2.3% decline over the past 24 hours and a 60.8% drop over the past year, with a market capitalization of around $1.07 billion.
