POSCO Completes Blockchain Pilot for Trade Receivables with Olea

POSCO International, the trading arm of South Korea's POSCO Holdings, successfully completed a pilot project on August 25 that involved tokenizing real trade receivables using the Avalanche blockchain. This initiative was executed in collaboration with Olea, a trade-finance firm backed by Standard Chartered's venture arm, SC Ventures. The pilot involved actual capital transactions rather than hypothetical scenarios, highlighting a growing institutional interest in tokenized trade finance.

The pilot was conducted by POSCO International America, the company's U.S. subsidiary, in partnership with Intain, which operates a Layer-1 network on Avalanche. The process began with AI-driven verification of trade documents, such as invoices and shipping records, ensuring their accuracy before they were recorded on the blockchain. Once verified, the receivables were registered on Intain's network, establishing a permanent ledger of ownership and transaction history, with Olea purchasing the tokenized receivables as both the trade-finance platform and capital provider.

This marks POSCO's second blockchain pilot in less than a month, following a similar project on July 27 that involved tokenizing trade receivables on the Injective blockchain. Both pilots utilized live trade data from POSCO International's global operations, underscoring the company's commitment to innovative financing solutions in the trade sector. The Asian Development Bank has estimated a global trade finance gap of approximately $2.5 trillion, indicating a significant opportunity for tokenization to streamline financing processes.

Looking ahead, POSCO International America, Olea, and Intain are exploring further applications, including the use of stablecoins for cross-border transactions and the development of digital treasury tools, which could enhance efficiency in trade finance.
