Reserve Bank of India Maintains Repo Rate at 5.25% Amid Dissenting Opinion

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to keep its benchmark repo rate steady at 5.25% following a recent monetary policy meeting held from August 3 to 5. This unanimous decision by the six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, reflects a cautious approach as the committee awaits more economic data before making any adjustments to the rate.

Despite the consensus, one MPC member expressed a differing view, suggesting that a rate hike might be necessary later in 2026 if inflationary pressures increase. Currently, the standing deposit facility rate is at 5.00%, while both the marginal standing facility rate and the Bank Rate are set at 5.50%. The repo rate remains the midpoint of this corridor, indicating a balanced stance by the RBI.

In its latest assessment, the RBI slightly revised its Consumer Price Index inflation forecast for the fiscal year 2027 down to 5.0% from 5.1%. Conversely, the GDP growth forecast was adjusted upward to 6.7% from 6.6% for the same period. The next MPC review is scheduled for October 5-7, 2026, during which the committee will closely monitor factors such as oil prices and global economic conditions, both of which significantly influence India's economic landscape.
