Samsung Electronics to Expand Taylor Wafer Plant in Texas by 2030

Samsung Electronics is set to accelerate the expansion of its wafer foundry capacity in the United States, with plans to initiate the second phase of construction at its Taylor wafer plant in Texas by the end of this year. The company aims to achieve mass production by 2030, responding to increasing customer demand, particularly from Tesla, which has become a core client following a significant foundry agreement.

To facilitate this expansion, Samsung has requested its major equipment suppliers to obtain SEMI certification in advance, a standard necessary for the safety assessment of semiconductor equipment before it can be imported or exported. The first phase of the Taylor plant is currently focused on installing equipment, with production expected to begin by the end of this year, emphasizing a 2-nanometer mass production process.

Despite previous delays in investment due to a lack of customers and a sluggish market, the agreement with Tesla, valued at approximately 22.76 trillion won, has spurred construction efforts. While specific details for the second phase remain unfinalized, preparations are already underway, and the pace of mass production will depend on supply expansion to Tesla and the acquisition of new major customers. Additionally, reports indicate that Samsung E&A is considering sending a team of construction personnel to the site.
