Tether and Fasanara Capital Launch $3 Billion StableFund for Private Credit

Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer, has partnered with London-based alternative asset manager Fasanara Capital to establish StableFund, a private credit vehicle aimed at bridging the financing gap for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) worldwide. The fund has been seeded with $400 million in co-investment capital and is targeting up to $3 billion from institutional investors. This initiative marks Tether's significant move to integrate stablecoins into traditional finance, focusing on enhancing lending processes.

StableFund will utilize Tether's USDT settlement infrastructure to facilitate faster lending to SMEs and consumers, primarily through short-duration, asset-backed credit. Fasanara Capital will manage the fund, leveraging its extensive network of 141 fintech lending originators across more than 60 countries to source and underwrite loans that are often overlooked by traditional banks. This approach aims to streamline loan disbursements and repayments by utilizing stablecoin technology instead of conventional banking methods.

The fund is strategically positioned to address a $5.7 trillion global financing gap identified by the International Finance Corporation, which highlights the disparity between the borrowing needs of small businesses and the available funding. The private credit market is experiencing rapid growth, currently estimated at around $3 trillion and projected to reach $5 trillion by 2029. Tether's involvement in StableFund not only signifies its ambition to expand beyond its core stablecoin operations but also aims to establish itself as a credible player in institutional finance, despite ongoing skepticism regarding its brand.

However, potential investors will need to consider the risks associated with counterparty exposure to Tether, regulatory uncertainties surrounding stablecoin usage in lending, and the operational challenges of integrating crypto-native settlement systems. The success of StableFund in reaching its $3 billion target will serve as a key indicator of institutional interest in crypto-integrated financial products.
