TSMC's A16 1.6nm Process Set for Mass Production in Late 2026

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced the completion of development and verification for its A16 process, which operates at an angstrom-level of 1.6nm. The company plans to begin mass production of this advanced technology in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The A16 process incorporates TSMC's Super Power Rail (SPR) technology, which separates signal routing from power routing by placing power delivery on the back of the wafer. This design aims to alleviate bottlenecks in chip performance.

Improvements with the A16 process include an expected 8% to 10% increase in computing speed, a reduction in energy consumption by 15% to 20%, and an enhancement in chip density by 8% to 10% compared to the existing 2nm process. TSMC considers the 1.6nm process a stepping stone towards its 1.4nm technology, with plans for mass production of the latter anticipated in 2028.
