Micron Announces Record Bonuses Amid Union Tensions in Taiwan

Micron Technology, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has announced that it will distribute record bonuses for the 2026 fiscal year to over 60,000 employees globally. This initiative is part of the company's recognition of its achievements over the past year. In Taiwan, where Micron employs approximately 15,000 individuals and has invested over NT$1.6 trillion, the bonuses include a cash bonus of NT$1 million for employees who joined before August 29, 2025, with proportional bonuses for later hires. Additionally, employees can earn an annual performance bonus of up to 500% of their basic target, along with stock awards, resulting in total compensation for production line workers equivalent to 35 to 68 months of salary.

Despite the generous bonuses, tensions have arisen with the local union, which has expressed dissatisfaction with the company's decision to announce bonuses without reaching a consensus. Union members are advocating for institutional reforms and a shift from a one-time bonus system to a profit-sharing model that would allocate 15% of profits to employees. They argue that the current bonus structure does not adequately address their concerns regarding compensation linked to the company's actual profits. The union has indicated that if their demands are not met, they will consider striking.

The Ministry of Labor in Taiwan is actively monitoring the situation and is in communication with local government entities, including the Taoyuan City Government and the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration, to address the ongoing labor issues.
