Alibaba Launches Open Weights for Qwen3.8-27B Multimodal AI Model

Alibaba has released open weights for its Qwen3.8-27B multimodal model, which features 27 billion parameters and is designed for local deployment on consumer hardware. This release signifies a strategic shift for Alibaba, moving away from keeping its flagship AI models proprietary and towards an open-sourcing approach.

The Qwen3.8-27B model is capable of processing text, images, and video inputs, making it suitable for various applications such as automated video content analysis and document understanding. It is optimized for hardware with approximately 24GB of VRAM, similar to high-end consumer graphics cards like the NVIDIA RTX 4090.

This release follows the earlier availability of open weights for the larger Qwen3.8-Max model, which has 2.4 trillion parameters and is intended for enterprise-scale deployments. The decision to provide open weights for both models allows developers to run inference locally, reducing reliance on cloud services and addressing compliance needs in regulated industries such as healthcare and finance.

The introduction of the Qwen3.8-27B is expected to enhance the Chinese AI ecosystem by providing local developers with access to advanced multimodal capabilities without the need for extensive infrastructure. This could lead to increased demand for Alibaba Cloud's services as more developers engage with the Qwen model family.
