China Bans Nvidia Chip Purchases Amid Struggles for Domestic Alternatives

China's government has implemented a ban on major technology firms from purchasing Nvidia AI chips, aiming to promote domestic alternatives. This directive, issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China in mid-September 2025, has prompted companies like ByteDance and Alibaba to halt acquisitions of Nvidia hardware, including the RTX Pro 6000D, as part of a broader push for technological self-reliance.

Despite the political directive, the transition to domestic chips has proven challenging. Huawei's Ascend chip series is the leading domestic option, but developers have reported that it lags behind Nvidia's offerings in terms of performance and software maturity. The extensive software ecosystem surrounding Nvidia's products, particularly the CUDA programming framework, poses a significant barrier to replacing Nvidia's dominance in the AI sector.

In response to the ban, some firms are adapting by optimizing their operations to run on lower-powered or mid-range local hardware. Companies such as DeepSeek, Baidu, and Alibaba are exploring these alternatives, but the overall impact of the ban has been significant, with Nvidia reporting zero revenue from H200 chip sales to China, despite previous approvals from the U.S. government for sales.

State-funded data center projects have also been restructured to mandate the use of domestically produced chips, creating a captive market for Chinese suppliers. However, the rapid implementation of this policy is outpacing the development of competitive domestic technology, leaving the AI sector at risk of falling behind in the global landscape.
