Anthropic Launches $35 Million Fund for Open-Source Cyber Defense

Anthropic has announced the launch of Project Glasswing, a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing the security of open-source software. The project is supported by a $35 million fund dedicated to open-source security projects and includes commitments of up to $100 million in model usage credits and $4 million in direct donations to various security organizations.

The initiative has garnered participation from major tech companies such as AWS, Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Central to the effort is Anthropic's unreleased Claude Mythos Preview model, which has already identified over 10,000 high and critical vulnerabilities in software codebases, including long-standing issues in established products.

The funding will be allocated across several channels, with $2.5 million directed to Alpha-Omega and the Open Source Security Foundation, and $1.5 million to the Apache Software Foundation. Additionally, Anthropic has committed $12.5 million to the Linux Foundation’s grant program and previously partnered with the Python Software Foundation for security improvements.

The initiative addresses the vulnerabilities inherent in open-source software, which is often maintained by small teams despite its widespread use by large organizations. The Log4j vulnerability incident in 2021 highlighted the risks associated with critical flaws in open-source components, prompting the need for enhanced security measures. With over 150 organizations now involved, Project Glasswing aims to provide essential resources for vulnerability scanning that many open-source foundations cannot afford.
