Apple Announces Record $110 Billion Stock Buyback Program

Apple has authorized a historic $110 billion stock buyback program, marking the largest repurchase initiative in the company's history. This announcement was made on May 2, 2024, and coincided with a 4% increase in its quarterly cash dividend and fiscal second-quarter revenue of $90.8 billion, which surpassed analyst expectations. Following the news, Apple's shares rose approximately 6% in after-hours trading, adding over $160 billion to the company's market capitalization in a single session.

Since Tim Cook became CEO in 2011, Apple has significantly transformed its approach to returning capital to shareholders. The company initiated its capital return program in 2012, which has since distributed hundreds of billions of dollars to investors through dividends and share repurchases. The mechanics of the buyback program allow for a reduction in the number of outstanding shares, potentially increasing earnings per share even if net income remains stable.

Despite facing challenges such as declining iPhone sales and increased competition from Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Apple’s strong fiscal Q2 revenue provides a solid foundation for this substantial buyback. The company’s services segment has also become a crucial revenue driver as hardware growth slows. The recent dividend increase complements the buyback strategy, appealing to both income-focused and capital appreciation investors. Reports indicate that Apple had initially planned a $100 billion buyback authorization for 2025, which was adjusted due to concerns over tariff-related costs.
