Arbitrum and Solana Co-Founders Debate Transaction Costs and MEV Protection

Steven Goldfeder, co-founder of Arbitrum, and Toly, co-founder of Solana, recently engaged in a discussion regarding on-chain transaction fees and the implications of miner extractable value (MEV) protection. Goldfeder emphasized that comparing transaction fees across different blockchain platforms requires a deeper analysis, as lower surface-level fees may mask significant hidden costs associated with MEV, such as front-running and sandwich attacks.

Goldfeder pointed out that Arbitrum One and Robinhood Chain actively work to mitigate these risks, suggesting that users may be better off paying transparent fees rather than facing potential losses from hidden MEV-related issues. In contrast, Toly argued that Arbitrum's current fee structure is less competitive, citing a 10% cut from transaction fees that he claims results in a higher cost than the losses incurred from sandwich attacks, which he estimates to be significantly lower.

Toly further criticized the single sequencer model, asserting that it limits competition and can lead to inefficiencies. He stated that a system focused solely on maximizing shareholder value cannot outperform a permissionless competitive environment, highlighting the ongoing debate over the best approach to transaction costs and user protection in the blockchain space.
