Bitcoin Options Market Reflects Caution Ahead of FOMC Meeting

As the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting approaches on September 15-16, Bitcoin traders are displaying a cautious sentiment in the options market. Data indicates a clear put skew, where the implied volatility on 25-delta puts is higher than that of equivalent calls. This trend suggests that traders are willing to pay more for downside protection than for potential upside participation, signaling a level of apprehension ahead of the Fed's policy decision.

Bitcoin was trading near $80,000 as of mid-September, and the overall implied volatility, tracked by the DVOL index on Deribit, was around 38.9% for near-term contracts. This level of volatility is moderate, indicating that while there is caution in the market, it does not reflect the heightened fear typically associated with significant sell-offs. Open interest data shows that calls still dominate, making up approximately 61% of total open interest, compared to 39% for puts, highlighting a complex market dynamic.

The current put skew, which stands at about 1.44 percentage points above comparable calls for the September 25 expiry, marks a shift in risk perception compared to earlier in 2026. During the July FOMC meeting, traders unwound near-term put hedges, leading to a much lower skew of around 4%. This recent increase in defensive positioning suggests that traders are preparing for potential volatility while maintaining their upside exposure.

The dual nature of the current market data—strong call positioning alongside elevated put premiums—creates a complicated signal for predicting price movements following the FOMC meeting. It indicates that while traders are not necessarily expecting a sell-off, they are keen to hedge against the possibility of one, reflecting a nuanced approach to risk management in the cryptocurrency options market.
