Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates by 25 Basis Points Amid Elevated Inflation

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16, 2026, bringing the federal funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%. This unanimous decision, made by the Federal Open Market Committee in a 12 to 0 vote, aims to address ongoing inflation concerns and support a return to the central bank's target inflation rate of 2%.

Prior to the announcement, markets anticipated the rate increase, with the CME FedWatch Tool indicating an 88% probability of the hike. Bitcoin was trading near $75,500 before the announcement, reflecting a decline of approximately 5% since the beginning of the week, influenced by the Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act. Following the Fed's decision, Bitcoin surged above $76,000, while other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Solana, and XRP also experienced gains.

Despite inflationary pressures, the Fed noted that economic activity is expanding at a solid pace, with resilient domestic spending, strong productivity growth, and robust capital investment. Job gains have kept pace with workforce growth, and the unemployment rate has remained stable. The focus now shifts to the Fed's future plans regarding interest rates and the potential for further increases if inflation persists.
