BitMart Founder Plans Police Involvement Amid Employee Dispute

Sheldon Xia, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange BitMart, has announced plans to involve law enforcement in response to allegations from former employees regarding unpaid salaries. This decision comes as the exchange navigates a tumultuous shutdown process that began with its announcement on July 26, 2023, to cease operations. The exchange, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, halted new user registrations immediately and is set to end trading activities by August 26, 2023, with a complete wind-down expected by January 31, 2027.

The closure has been marred by numerous complaints from users and former staff. Reports indicate that users are experiencing delays in withdrawals, while ex-employees claim they are unable to access their funds or receive owed wages. Additionally, a Hungarian firm has filed a police complaint regarding approximately $80,000 in frozen assets. Xia has publicly denied any misappropriation of funds and stated that his team is working on an asset inventory and processing withdrawal requests, amidst growing concerns about the exchange's financial viability.

BitMart's troubles are not new; the exchange previously suffered a significant security breach in December 2021, resulting in losses estimated between $150 million and $196 million. Despite promises to compensate affected users, the incident raised ongoing questions about the platform's financial health. The decision to escalate the employee salary dispute to law enforcement is unusual, as companies typically negotiate unpaid wages during wind-downs. This move suggests Xia may either doubt the validity of the claims or is attempting to manage the narrative during a period of scrutiny.

With the final closure date set for January 2027, Xia faces the challenge of addressing outstanding withdrawals, employee disputes, and external complaints within a limited timeframe. As over 300 users continue to submit withdrawal requests each hour, the central concern remains whether their funds are secure and if they will be able to retrieve them before the exchange ceases operations completely.
