California Security Personnel Plan Strike Affecting Major Tech Companies

Security personnel providing services to major technology companies in California, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, are set to strike this week. The United Service Workers West Union announced that these workers submitted a 72-hour strike notice, intending to begin their walkout at 4:30 AM on Friday. This action could lead to some tech companies closing their offices and requiring employees to work from home.

The labor dispute involves several security service companies, such as Allied Universal, Securitas, and GardaWorld, and affects approximately 14,000 security personnel in California. Workers are demanding higher wages, improved healthcare benefits, and better job training. Negotiations for a new labor contract have been ongoing for several months, with discussions scheduled to continue on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

A union spokesperson indicated that the strike has not yet been finalized, and a march for security personnel is planned for Tuesday in downtown San Francisco, culminating at the Salesforce Tower, which houses Salesforce's headquarters. On September 3, security personnel voted to authorize the strike during a rally in San Francisco. As of now, tech companies in the Bay Area have not announced any office closures related to the impending strike.
