UK Workers Spend Nearly £1 Billion Annually on AI Tools for Work

A recent survey conducted by Deloitte reveals that UK workers are collectively spending nearly £1 billion ($1.4 billion) each year on generative AI tools for professional use. The survey, which included responses from 25,000 employees across the United Kingdom, highlights a significant trend of employees personally funding access to AI technologies that their employers have not officially sanctioned.

Approximately 17% of UK workers are investing their own money in generative AI tools such as premium subscriptions to ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. The survey found that about two-thirds of respondents, or roughly 66%, have experimented with these tools, while nearly a quarter, 24%, utilize them on a daily basis. Users reported saving an average of 70 minutes per week on tasks such as information retrieval, email drafting, and document summarization.

The findings raise concerns for employers regarding security and compliance, as 31% of workers are using these tools without their company's knowledge. This unregulated use of AI creates potential blind spots in data governance, making it difficult for organizations to ensure that the tools meet internal standards for data handling and ethical use. The survey suggests that this shadow AI usage should prompt immediate attention from Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) across the UK.

For AI tool providers, the survey indicates a substantial and largely untapped market opportunity within the UK. With individual workers spending nearly £1 billion annually on personal AI tools, the potential market for corporate licenses and compliant AI solutions is significantly larger, presenting a promising avenue for growth in the enterprise sector.
