Coinbase Seeks SEC Approval for Single-Stock Perpetuals in the U.S.

Coinbase has submitted two notice registrations to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of its initiative to offer single-stock perpetuals in the United States. This move aims to broaden its equity-derivatives offerings from thematic stock indexes to individual stocks, enhancing the trading options available to U.S. users.

Currently, U.S. customers can trade perpetual-style futures linked to sectors such as artificial intelligence and technology. The new single-stock perpetuals were previously introduced for eligible customers outside the U.S. in March. Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer, Faryar Shirzad, described the SEC filings as an initial step, indicating that the next phase will involve seeking approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

The registration packet includes a Form 1-N for Coinbase Derivatives LLC and a Form BD-N for Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., both dated September 1. While the filings outline the registering entities, they do not specify which individual stocks will be included or which classes of U.S. customers may qualify for the new products. Coinbase Financial Markets is already registered as a futures commission merchant, facilitating customer trading of listed derivatives.

Coinbase's offshore perpetuals currently cover major companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon, as well as exchange-traded funds like SPY and QQQ. These products allow retail customers to access trading through Coinbase Advanced, while institutions can use the Coinbase International Exchange, although U.S. persons are currently excluded from these offerings. The U.S. index product operates around the clock with significant leverage and settles in USDC, focusing on stock baskets rather than individual companies.
