Cryptocurrency Market Sees Significant Drop in Financing for August

The cryptocurrency market experienced a notable decline in financing activities during August, with a total of approximately $596 million raised across 49 events. This figure represents a 74.2% decrease from July's total of about $2.312 billion and a 35.5% drop compared to $924 million in August 2022. Despite the decrease in total financing, the number of events saw a slight increase of 2.1% from 48 in July, although it is down 42.4% from 85 events in the same month last year.

In sector-specific analysis, decentralized finance (DeFi) led the month with 19 financing events, but the total disclosed amount was only around $73.1 million. The infrastructure sector followed with 14 financings totaling approximately $311 million, while centralized finance (CeFi) completed 8 financings amounting to about $199 million. The top three projects by financing amount were Ripple, which raised $275 million, followed by RQD Clearing at $74 million and Fasset at $68 million, collectively accounting for 70% of the total financing for the month.

Additionally, the real-world asset (RWA) sector reported a financing coverage rate of about 28.2%, with 529 RWA-related projects tracked by RootData. However, only one RWA financing event occurred in August, involving Entropy, which raised $14 million. The month also saw a significant decline in merger and acquisition activities, with only 6 events disclosed, down from 19 in July. Major acquisitions included BitGo's purchase of NYDIG and Nasdaq's acquisition of LeveL Markets, primarily concentrated in the CeFi and payments sectors.
