Revolut Reports Data Leak Affecting Some Users Due to Impersonation Scam

Revolut has announced that a data breach occurred when an unauthorized third party exploited a legitimate email address from a government agency to submit fraudulent requests for customer data. This incident, described by the company as a "complex external impersonation scam," resulted in the exposure of sensitive information for a limited number of customers, although the company's systems and customer funds remain secure.

The leaked information potentially includes personal details such as names, dates of birth, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and copies of identification documents, along with account statements and complete transaction histories, including records of Bitcoin transactions. Notably, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès has confirmed that he is among those affected by the breach.

Revolut has taken steps to mitigate the situation by banning the email address involved in the scam and has notified relevant authorities, including government agencies, law enforcement, and financial regulatory bodies. The company has not disclosed the exact number of affected customers or the specific government agency whose domain was impersonated. On-chain investigator ZachXBT suggested that while the scale of the incident may be limited, it could have targeted high-net-worth individuals.
