Debate Over Fee Model for Robinhood Chain Involves Arbitrum and Solana Founders

Steven Goldfeder, founder of Arbitrum, and Toly, co-founder of Solana, recently engaged in a discussion regarding the fee structure of the newly launched Robinhood Chain. Toly argued that the 10% revenue share paid to Arbitrum by Robinhood Chain is adequate to cover transaction fees that are four times higher on the Solana network, implying that deploying on Solana could lead to reduced user gas fees.

Goldfeder countered Toly's claims by stating that under the Arbitrum architecture, Robinhood could retain approximately 90% of gas revenue. He emphasized that this model positions Arbitrum as a 'landlord' rather than a 'tenant,' suggesting that Robinhood's choice of Arbitrum was strategic in maximizing its revenue potential.

The debate also touched on the operational aspects of the Robinhood Chain. Toly proposed that Robinhood could implement fees at the application level while leveraging a more cost-effective underlying network. However, Goldfeder pointed out that a significant portion of on-chain activity does not pass through Robinhood's front end, indicating that if Robinhood were merely a tenant of the underlying network, it would miss out on capturing revenue from these additional activities.

Market reports indicate that Robinhood considered both Solana and Arbitrum during the initial phases of product development, ultimately opting for Arbitrum due to its capability for independent chain deployment. This decision reflects Robinhood's strategy to enhance its operational efficiency and revenue generation in the competitive blockchain landscape.
