Global Bond Yields Reach Multi-Decade Highs Amid Rising Oil Prices

On September 1, global bond markets experienced significant turmoil as renewed hostilities between the US and Iran led to a sharp increase in oil prices. The US 10-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 4.78%, marking its highest level since January 2025. In the UK, gilt yields surpassed 5.25%, the steepest increase since the 2008 financial crisis, while Germany's 10-year Bund yield reached a 15-year high of 3.36%. Japan's 10-year JGB yield approached 3%, a level not seen since 1996.

The surge in bond yields coincided with Brent crude oil prices jumping between $91 and $94 per barrel, driven by fears of supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil transport. This spike followed the first direct clashes between US and Iranian forces in over a month, reigniting concerns over geopolitical stability in the region. Market analysts described the situation as a 'perfect storm' for bond markets, exacerbated by rising oil prices and hawkish signals from central banks regarding interest rate hikes.

Expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in September increased significantly, with market probabilities climbing to between 65% and 74%. The implications of rising government bond yields extend beyond fixed income markets, affecting sectors sensitive to interest rates, such as real estate and technology. Higher yields can lead to increased mortgage rates and corporate borrowing costs, impacting businesses and consumers alike. Additionally, the crypto market may face challenges as rising real yields diminish the appeal of non-yielding assets.
