Grab Acquires 60% Stake in Atome Financial for $1.49 Billion to Enhance Lending in Southeast Asia

Grab Holdings has announced the acquisition of a 60% stake in Atome Financial, a buy-now-pay-later platform based in Singapore, for $1.49 billion. This transaction marks Grab's largest financial services acquisition to date and underscores its commitment to expanding its lending operations despite a challenging year for its stock, which has seen a nearly 40% decline.

The acquisition values Atome Financial at over $2 billion, a figure supported by the company's impressive performance, which included $470 million in revenue for 2025, reflecting an 80% increase year-over-year. Atome has also achieved pre-tax profitability for two consecutive years, indicating strong financial health and market demand for its services.

This deal is part of a broader strategy by Grab to enhance its financial services portfolio, following previous acquisitions such as a 50.1% stake in Stash Financial for $425 million and the purchase of Foodpanda's Taiwan operations for $600 million. With a gross loan portfolio of $1.44 billion as of the first quarter of 2026, Grab aims to leverage Atome's established merchant network and credit assessment capabilities to accelerate growth in its lending segment.

As Grab integrates Atome Financial into its operations, it will gain significant revenue contributions, potentially reshaping its financial landscape. The competitive environment in Southeast Asia is intensifying, with rivals like GoTo and Sea Limited expanding their own financial services, making Grab's acquisition a strategic move to strengthen its market position.
