Merck KGaA Launches Cocoa Traceability Pilot Using Hedera Technology
Merck KGaA, a science and technology company based in Darmstadt, Germany, has initiated a pilot program aimed at enhancing cocoa traceability through a collaboration with The Hashgraph Group and PwC Germany. This initiative links physical authentication scans to records on the Hedera network, coinciding with the upcoming enforcement of the European Union's deforestation regulation, which will require compliance from large and medium operators by December 30, 2026.
The pilot program does not disclose specific details such as the volume of cocoa involved, the number of farms participating, or a timeline for moving beyond the pilot phase. The European Commission's regulation mandates that operators maintain geolocation data for all plots of land used for cocoa production, which includes precise coordinates and polygon tracing for larger plots. This requirement aims to ensure accountability in the cocoa supply chain, particularly in relation to deforestation.
Merck's M-Trust technology is designed to verify the authenticity of products through embedded security markers, while The Hashgraph Group's TrackTrace platform records these authentication events on the Hedera network. The collaboration aims to create a verifiable trail of both finished products and their raw materials, which could be crucial in the event of food recalls or compliance investigations, according to industry experts.
The cocoa industry is characterized by a complex supply chain involving millions of smallholder farmers, particularly in West Africa, which produces the majority of the world's cocoa. The pilot program is seen as a foundational step towards broader applications of digital product passports, although food products, including cocoa, are currently exempt from certain regulations under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.
