PwC, Merck, and Hashgraph Group Launch Cocoa Traceability Pilot

The Hashgraph Group, in partnership with Merck and supported by PwC Germany, is initiating a pilot program for a cocoa traceability system. This innovative solution integrates Merck's M-Trust physical authentication technology with the TrackTrace digital product passport platform, which operates on the Hedera network. The aim is to ensure the verification of cocoa's origin, authenticity, quality, and compliance data from the farm to the consumer.

This initiative is particularly relevant as cocoa is one of the commodities included in the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Under the revised timeline established in December 2025, large operators and traders will be required to comply with these regulations starting December 30, 2026, while micro and small operators will have until June 30, 2027. The traceability solution also aligns with the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), although food and feed products are currently excluded from its scope.

The framework developed through this pilot is designed to be adaptable beyond cocoa, with potential applications in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, luxury goods, and industrial components. Husen Kapasi, head of PwC Germany's enterprise blockchain business, emphasized the solution's capability for verifiability, which could be crucial for managing food recalls and ensuring compliance in investigations.
