Nvidia Faces Challenges as Microsoft Expands AI Investments

Hyperscale technology companies are projected to nearly double their spending on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, reaching between $660 billion and $690 billion by 2026. In 2025, these companies collectively spent around $380 billion on AI-related capital expenditures, marking a significant investment trend in the sector. Microsoft is at the forefront of this spending surge, forecasting over $120 billion in AI-related expenditures for fiscal 2026, with a notable 75% year-over-year increase in its recent fiscal Q3 spending.

Nvidia currently dominates the AI accelerator market, capturing approximately 90% of related spending, which translates to around $180 billion in annual GPU purchases. However, the company faces several risks, including a high concentration of revenue from a few major clients and a growing trend among competitors like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to develop their own custom AI chips. This shift could significantly alter market dynamics, as even a small change in market share could impact Nvidia's future prospects.

Microsoft's position in the AI landscape is unique, as it operates on both sides of the AI value chain, providing the infrastructure and the services that utilize it. The company's Azure platform, along with its AI offerings and enterprise tools, positions it to capitalize on its substantial investments. With a committed Azure backlog of $80 billion, Microsoft has a level of revenue visibility that is advantageous compared to many of its peers.

Investors are advised to monitor Nvidia's revenue concentration and the adoption rate of custom silicon among its largest customers. A scenario where major players like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon increasingly rely on in-house chips could diminish Nvidia's market share. Meanwhile, Microsoft's extensive commitments to data-center leases indicate a strong belief in the long-term importance of AI computing, similar to the transformative impact of cloud computing in recent years.
