Research: Future Quantum Attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum Requires Over Half Less Computation Than Google Baseline

PANews, September 10 – According to CoinDesk, a new paper by researchers from multiple institutions including the Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, and StarkWare shows that the estimated computational cost for a key step in a future quantum attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum has dropped by more than half compared to the baseline data published by Google in March. The newly designed quantum circuit uses approximately 1,151 logical qubits and 1.3 million Toffoli gates, with a comprehensive score of about 1.5 billion, significantly lower than Google's previous level of around 3 billion. The research optimizes the repeated point addition operations in Shor's algorithm, theoretically enabling a sufficiently powerful quantum computer to derive a private key from a public key and forge transactions.
