Sam Altman Explained Why OpenAI Will Not Go Public in 2026

      • OpenAI will not hold an IPO in 2026.
      • Altman linked the decision to AI safety.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will not go public in 2026 due to concerns about artificial intelligence safety. He shared this in an exclusive interview with Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell, where he also discussed the risks of AI development, the possibility of controlling more powerful models, and the need for international regulation.

OpenAI Postponed Its IPO Amid AI Safety Debates

OpenAI previously confidentially filed an S-1 registration statement with the SEC for an IPO, but did not disclose the exact timing, offering size, price range, or exchange.

Altman confirmed that an IPO will not take place in 2026.

“We’re not rushing into an IPO. I actually think that given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public,” he said.

According to the CEO, the company will go public “when we’re ready, which is when the business is ready, when we feel ready from what the moment is like in society with this technology.”

In the interview, Altman also said he does not consider it acceptable to risk humanity’s future for the sake of AI development. He said he is prepared to push back even against his own investors if it becomes necessary to pause or completely halt model development.

The OpenAI CEO also hinted at an agreement with other industry players to slow model development so that safety and alignment solutions can keep pace with the growth of their capabilities.

Against the backdrop of these statements, Dr. Eli David criticized the approach of OpenAI and Anthropic. He suggested that the IPO delay may be tied not to safety, but to financial problems and the lack of a clear path to profitability.

As a reminder, the company’s CFO Sarah Friar told employees that OpenAI could become a public company by the end of 2027 or earlier.
