Samsung Electronics' HBM4 Sales Surge, Foundry Business Poised for Profitability

KB Securities reported on September 11 that Samsung Electronics is experiencing a significant increase in its High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) sales, with HBM4 sales rising more than three times quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter of 2026. This surge is expected to boost Samsung's market share in the HBM sector from 33% in the second quarter to an anticipated 40% by the fourth quarter. HBM4 is projected to represent over 60% of Samsung's total HBM sales in the latter half of the year.

Samsung has successfully established mass production of HBM4 and has begun supplying HBM4E samples to key customers. The company has also adopted advanced technologies, including the HBM5 architecture featuring 1c core bare chips and 2-nanometer base bare chips, while outlining a roadmap for its next-generation ZHBM.

In addition to its HBM advancements, Samsung's foundry business is showing signs of recovery. The yield for its 4-nanometer process has stabilized above 80%, and the yield for the 2-nanometer Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology has rapidly increased to over 70%. Analyst Kim Dong-Won from KB Securities indicated that the foundry segment is expected to turn profitable in the third quarter, with the improved 2-nanometer yield potentially attracting orders from major clients in the United States within the year.
