Senate Blocks Key Digital Asset Bill, Leading to Decline in Crypto Stocks

Crypto-related stocks experienced a significant decline on Tuesday following the U.S. Senate's decision to block a crucial digital asset market structure bill during a procedural vote. The legislation, which aimed to grant the Commodity Futures Trading Commission primary regulatory authority over the digital assets industry, failed to secure the 60 votes necessary for advancement.

Major companies in the sector were impacted, with Coinbase shares dropping more than 9% and Circle Internet Group falling over 9.6%. Other notable declines included Strategy, which fell roughly 5%, and Bitmine Immersion Technologies, which lost more than 7%.

The bill faced opposition from Senate Democrats, who raised concerns regarding ethics provisions that were intended to address potential conflicts of interest related to former President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency business dealings. The updated version of the Clarity Act, released by Senate Republican leaders, included measures aimed at enhancing state attorneys general's enforcement capabilities and limiting crypto companies from offering rewards or interest to stablecoin users. This legislative defeat occurs just weeks before the midterm elections in November.
