U.S. Senate Rejects CLARITY Act Amidst Controversy Over Trump Family's Crypto Profits

The U.S. Senate recently voted against advancing the CLARITY Act, with a procedural vote tally of 49-50, falling short of the 60 votes required to initiate debate. No Democratic senators supported the bill, which was criticized by Senator Elizabeth Warren during a speech where she highlighted concerns over its implications for investor protections and potential corruption.

Warren asserted that former President Donald Trump and his family earned $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency ventures in 2025, a figure that surpasses the revenue of any publicly listed cryptocurrency company in the United States for that year. She pointed out that many investors in Trump's crypto projects suffered significant losses, including nearly $4 billion lost by buyers of meme coins.

In her remarks, Warren condemned the ethical concessions made by Republicans in negotiations with the White House, describing them as insufficient to curb Trump's financial gains from the crypto sector. She warned that the CLARITY Act would create substantial loopholes in nearly a century of securities law, potentially allowing non-crypto companies to bypass investor protections and enabling banks to engage in risky crypto-related activities using customer deposits.
