Tesla Granted Permit for 5,000 Autonomous Vehicles in Nevada

The Nevada Transportation Authority has approved Tesla Robotaxi LLC for a 12-month permit to operate a full autonomous vehicle network across Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. This significant expansion allows Tesla to increase its operational capacity from just 10 vehicles to 5,000, marking a 500-fold increase in its operational ceiling within a month.

The new permit replaces an interim authorization that was issued in late July 2026, which limited Tesla's operations to 10 vehicles with specific restrictions on geography, speed, and airport access. With the new approval, Tesla can deploy its vehicles throughout the entire county, including access to the airport corridor, providing greater operational flexibility.

Tesla's journey in Nevada began in September 2025 when it received a testing permit from the Nevada DMV. The interim permit served as a proof-of-concept phase for regulators to observe Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology under controlled conditions. The recent approval allows for a gradual scaling of operations rather than an immediate deployment of all 5,000 vehicles.

In addition to Tesla, the Nevada Transportation Authority also granted similar approvals to Uber and Waymo, creating a competitive landscape for commercial robotaxi services in the state. Each company brings unique strengths to the market, with Tesla relying on a vision-based approach using cameras and neural networks, while Waymo utilizes lidar sensors and high-definition mapping. The presence of these three major players will provide valuable data on ride completion rates, safety incidents, and passenger satisfaction, which could influence future regulatory decisions in other states.
