Symbiosis Recovers 15 BTC Following Bitcoin Bridge Exploit, Offers Bounty to Attacker

On September 11, 2026, the cross-chain protocol Symbiosis experienced a significant security breach involving its Bitcoin Bridge, which allowed an attacker to exploit a vulnerability in the BridgeV2 contract. This flaw enabled the minting of an enormous quantity of unbacked syBTC tokens, with a notional value estimated at $46.1 billion. However, the actual losses were limited to approximately $336,000, as the attacker converted around 4.39 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) on Ethereum's Uniswap V4.

The breach was detected at approximately 04:28 UTC by Blockaid, an on-chain security firm, which helped mitigate further losses by alerting Symbiosis before any public announcement was made. In response, Symbiosis halted all BTC-related routing within the protocol while ensuring that other cross-chain routes remained operational. As of September 13, the Bitcoin Bridge remained inactive, with no timeline for its resumption provided.

In a bid to recover the lost funds, Symbiosis successfully retrieved about 15 BTC from the exploit and secured these assets in a multisig wallet, which requires multiple private keys for transaction authorization. The protocol has also offered a 20% bounty to the attacker for the return of the stolen funds, with a deadline set for September 13. If the attacker does not respond, the bounty will be redirected to individuals who can provide valuable information to aid in recovery efforts.

This incident underscores ongoing security vulnerabilities in the cryptocurrency space, particularly concerning synthetic and wrapped Bitcoin representations. The relatively contained losses of $336,000 contrast sharply with the potential risks highlighted by the notional exposure of $46.1 billion, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures in cross-chain bridges that manage large asset pools.
