Tesla Resolves Longest Strike in Sweden by Buying Out Workers

Tesla has concluded the longest modern strike in Sweden's history, lasting 1,021 days, by offering severance packages to the remaining members of the IF Metall union. The strike, which began on October 27, 2023, stemmed from Tesla's refusal to sign a collective bargaining agreement, a common practice in Sweden where about 90% of workers are covered by such agreements. The union announced the suspension of all industrial action on August 19, 2026, following the buyout, although no collective agreement was reached.

The industrial action escalated from a small walkout by service technicians to a broader conflict, with other unions participating in sympathy strikes. This included dockworkers, postal workers, and electricians, all of whom refused to support Tesla's operations, leading to a significant decline in vehicle registrations. In 2025, Tesla's registrations in Sweden dropped by 66.8%, from 21,894 in 2024 to just 7,252, reflecting the impact of the prolonged strike on sales.

Tesla's decision to buy out the remaining union members allowed the company to dissolve the organized workforce without engaging in negotiations. This strategy has been interpreted positively by investors, as evidenced by a 4% rise in Tesla's stock following the announcement. The resolution of the strike is seen as a way to reduce operational risks in Europe while avoiding binding labor commitments, although it raises questions about the company's labor relations strategy in the region, particularly in light of its operations in Germany.
