U.S. Bank Successfully Tests USBDC Stablecoin for Cross-Border Payments

U.S. Bank, the fifth largest commercial bank in the United States and a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp, has announced the successful completion of a real-time cross-border payment test utilizing its own US dollar stablecoin, USBDC. The transactions were executed via the Stellar blockchain between the bank's entities in North America and Europe, marking a significant step in the integration of stablecoins into traditional banking systems.

The pilot program validated several functionalities of USBDC, including minting, payment redemption, freezing, and recovery. It also tested the bank's digital asset platform, which is designed to issue, manage, and transfer tokenized assets, thereby facilitating seamless interactions between conventional banking infrastructure and blockchain networks. U.S. Bank's Chairman and CEO, Gunjan Kedia, emphasized that this pilot demonstrates the bank's capability to enhance global cash management and fund flows.

This initiative is part of a broader trend as banks increasingly explore stablecoin applications. U.S. Bank's collaboration with the Stellar Development Foundation aims to expand future use cases, including liquidity management and collateral transfers. Additionally, the recent announcement by 21 financial institutions, including major players like Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, to form a company for issuing stablecoins indicates a growing interest in this area, with plans to launch a dollar token by the first half of 2027.
