U.S. Task Force Freezes $52 Million in Laundered Cryptocurrency in Major Operation

On September 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force successfully restrained approximately $52 million in laundered cryptocurrency in a single-day operation. The crackdown targeted Xinbi Guarantee, a Chinese-language marketplace on Telegram that served as a hub for fraudulent activities. The operation also involved the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which sanctioned Xinbi Guarantee and two affiliated entities, Anwen and SafeW Technology, designating them as significant transnational criminal organizations.

In conjunction with the cryptocurrency freeze, a two-week operation in Madagascar dismantled 13 scam compounds operated by Chinese nationals, leading to the arrest of around 400 to 500 individuals. These compounds reportedly exploited forced labor, with victims trafficked under false pretenses of legitimate employment and coerced into executing fraud schemes. The prevalent scam method associated with these operations is known as 'pig butchering,' where fraudsters build relationships with victims over time before persuading them to invest in fake platforms.

The Strike Force, which began operations in November 2025 under D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, has now frozen or seized a total of $938 million in scam-related assets within less than a year. This recent operation highlights the increasing effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in identifying and securing illicit funds in the cryptocurrency space, aided by cooperation from private sector firms like Tether, the issuer of a widely used stablecoin, which assisted in identifying and locking down relevant wallets.
